Last weekend I made another visit to Yamato Sushi (map, 616 Davie St, Vancouver, BC, Canada, phone: 604-682-5494).

It’s a hole-in-the-wall Japanese restaurant on the edge of Yaletown that is popular for take-out but also has a few tables for eating in.

I ordered a bunch of my favorite items including the miso soup, ebi sunomono salad, chopped scallop roll, nigiri sushi (tamago, inari and ikura), and an unagi cone. My friend ordered the vegetarian bento box and an avocado roll.

Everything was really good, but one note is that the rice on the chopped scallop roll seemed not quite as fluffy as I usually like. But in general I have been happy with the quality of food at Yamato and the prices are quite reasonable for the downtown area (my meal including tax and tip came to $19).

I live in the area and Yamato is a place where I often bring my friends, who are visiting from other parts of the Lower Mainland.

I made a video of our food (that’s pretty appetizing I think) and you can watch it on Youtube (or on Blip.tv) or use the player below. Until next time, hope you enjoy the many amazing restaurants in Vancouver and the Greater Vancouver / BC Lower Mainland area.

Tsui Hang Village Chinese Restaurant (map, 1193 Granville St, Vancouver, BC, phone: 604-683-6868) is a large, well kept Chinese restaurant near the Granville Street night-club entertainment district at the corner of Davie and Granville.

Popular with the after-bar crowd, Tsui Hang is open very late at night (even until 3 or 4 in the morning – but be sure to call them to confirm) and gets busy with talkative night-clubbers recovering from an evening dancing and imbibing.

The airy dining room is well lit and nicely maintained with some beautiful oriental vases displayed high above the dining room floor. Upon overhearing me remarking to my friend on the vases, the waiter interjected that they are “not real”. But although the decorative vases may be imitations, the food at Tsui Hang is definitely the real thing. If you’re a fan of Chinese seafood dishes, you’ll appreciate the menu (which is quite extensive and has a variety of vegetarian items too).

We ordered the Sauteed Rock Cod Fillets ($14.50, pictured below) and the Mixed Seafood Chow Mein ($13.50, also pictured below). The food was really tasty, the fish tender and enveloped in a delectable and nuanced sauce – even receiving positive comments from my dining companion who is of Asian descent. We also ordered a bowl of steamed rice ($2.00) which was quite large and nicely accompanied the two dishes.

Looking for something quick and on-the-go? Tsui Hang also has a take out window facing Davie Street which offers specials like sweet and sour pork on rice and chow mein for around $5.00.

I can see why he likes it: the prices at Mr. Sushi are reasonable, the quality quite high, and the service friendly. The menu has both vegetarian and non-vegetarian items, with some really creative rolls as well as the standard Japanese food you can expect to find around town.

I started the meal off with some Japanese green tea, along with a bowl of steaming Miso Soup ($1.00, pictured below) and a cold Ebi Sunomono Salad ($3.50, also pictured below).

Jason Chin writes on EatVancouver.net (click here to read review):

I asked about the absolute best item on the menu and was eventually steered towards the apparently very popular Crazy Boy Roll ($5.95). A bit of an unorthodox roll, the crazy boy is crab, cucumber and avocado roll served tempura style (battered and deep fried). It is then sliced lengthwise and served like boat with optional hot sauce (siracha).

The Crazy Boy Roll appealed to me as well, and I gave it a try ($5.95, pictured below). Mine had the siracha hot sauce, and it was very hot! I would recommend it without the hot sauce unless you are familiar with the siracha sauce and know what you are getting into. (I actually have a bottle of the siracha sauce at home and I like putting it on my kraft dinner sometimes, along with black pepper, Parmesan cheese, and ketchup. But I digress!)

I also ordered a 1/2 Spider Roll ($5.95, also pictured below), which thankfully doesn’t feature a real spider, but instead a variety of soft shell crab. It was very easy to eat and tantalized my taste buds terrifically!

This satisfying meal came to $16.40 before tax and tip.

Being somewhat arithmetically challenged, I used GeoTip, my handy Cell Phone Tip Calculator program (free download click here), and I figured out that I should pay a total of about $20 (with 5% tax and 15% tip).

Of course if you feeling a little less adventurous or are on a budget, there are plenty of combinations at Mr Sushi which are in the $8 – 12 range for a complete dinner.

Pictured below is the 1/2 order of Futomaki ($4.25), as well as some shots of the Combo C ($12.95) which includes 5 pieces of Sashimi, 3 pieces of Nigiri sushi, some tempura, and chicken or beef teriyaki. The Combo C is a huge amount of food, and I always order it if I’m feeling especially hungry and want something fairly conventional.

When I’m feeling a little more adventurous, I like trying some of their specialty rolls such as the SSSR Roll (made with smoked salmon and shrimp, $4.50) or the gigantic Special House Roll (jam packed with tuna, salmon, avocado, tamago, kani, and masago, $5.25 for 1/2 order). The restaurant also has some good choices for vegetarians such as the various veggie rolls, and the tofu teriyaki.

The restaurant is fairly small and does not take reservations, so if you go during peak times you might have to wait a few minutes to get a table. But a policy of no reservations seems to be the norm for some of the more popular and reasonably priced restaurants in the area, such as the Greek restaurant Stepho’s, just a few doors down Davie. Pictured below are some of the items we ate, including the Tuna and Salmon sashimi ($9.95), the Toro Sashimi ($10.50), half order of House Roll sushi ($5.25), chopped scallop roll ($3.90), and some nigiri sushi pieces ($0.99 cents a piece for Inari and Saba, and $1.95 per piece of Ikura salmon roe).

cvancouver writes (click here for their review):

Every sushi roll is over sized and jam packed. Party trays (from $20-$35) are enough to feed 4 average person. Compared to many eat-in restaurants, I find Sashimi to be quite the “bang for your buck.”

Nuba Restaurant (web site, 1206 Seymour St., Vancouver, BC, Canada, phone: 778-371-3266, at Davie and Seymour) is a hole-in-the-wall restaurant downtown that serves delicious Lebanese food at reasonable prices. This restaurant serves many vegan and vegetarian dishes, as well as a few selections with meat. Nuba has another downtown location at 322 West Hastings (phone: 604-688-1655).

I enjoyed the Najib’s Special plate (pictured below, $9.29) which featured some wonderful crispy cauliflower served with roast potatoes, hummus, salad and pita. I could have ordered rice instead of the roast potatoes, but the potatoes were a good choice. I also had the Baklava for a sweet dessert ($2.62, not pictured).

paekakariki writes on DineHere.ca (click here to read review):

We love Nuba for healthy fast well priced food. The garden falafel is really tasty with avocado and their homemade pickle. The vegetarian appetizer plate is a great sampler of all their goodies. I love the flavour of the lentil/rice/avocado dish, the crispy cauliflower is amazing and the mushrooms are great!

Shanghai 1949 (facebook, 1215 Davie Street, Vancouver, BC, Canada, phone 604-699-8878) is a modern Chinese bistro located in Vancouver’s downtown West End neighborhood. It was almost 10pm on a warm Monday evening and I happened to be meandering around downtown with a friend, taking in the sights and sounds of citizens at leisure (the next day being Canada Day). The modern decor of this restaurant always intrigued me and we decided to pop in for a quick bite.

The 1949 Spring Rolls ($4.00, pictured below) were quite frankly the best spring rolls I have ever had. I believe they were made with pork, and were incredibly juicy.

The restaurant was all out of Cod fish, but instead the chef prepared a special Malaysian-inspired spicy Tai (snapper) fish, which was bursting with flavor and was quite a generous portion ($12, also pictured below). We also ordered a plate of steamed white rice ($2). Not bad for a late night snack, and I’ll definitely be back to try some of their other selections.

It is one of my favorite places to go for lunch with coworkers. I enjoyed a true sushi feast (pictured below) and the total price including tax and tip came to $25 per person (for six people). After your meal, you might want to enjoy a walk along the False Creek waterfront seawall, which is just steps away. The restaurant is also very close to the Yaletown Canada Line Skytrain Station which will be operational in 2009. In the meantime it is a 5 minute taxi ride from most downtown hotels.

Cactus Club (web site) is a chain of trendy, popular restaurants with great food, fun atmosphere, and awesome service.

Their downtown Yaletown location (357 Davie Street, Vancouver, BC, Canada, phone 604-685-8070) is conveniently located in one of Vancouver’s most upscale and chic neighborhoods, a short taxi ride from any hotel in the downtown core. They also provide valet parking.

As an appetizer I enjoyed the Westcoast Pocket ($4.00, pictured below), which is an inventive creation that is made from sushi rice, salmon, Japanese Inari (bean curd wrapper), and is garnished with pickled ginger and Japanese masago. The Westcoast Pocket is one of my favorite menu items at Cactus Club and I seem to order one every time I’m there.

As a main course, I selected the 9oz Sirloin Steak (with four mushroom demi-glace: shitake, portabello, button, and crimini mushrooms, $27, also pictured below). The steak was juicy and tender – truly satisfying!

To finish this fabulous meal I enjoyed the fresh baked apple pie ($7.50, also pictured below). If by any chance you have some room left over for dessert, I highly recommend the apple pie! It was made with sweet and slightly tart ripe apples, and the flaky crust was heavenly.

If you’re interested in Live Jazz, be sure to check out their West Vancouver location (855 Main Street, West Vancouver, BC, phone, 604-922-1707) which features the Geoff Peters Trio on select Tuesday nights.

Carrotstop, a reviewer on Dinehere.ca writes:

[...] Yamato Sushi on Davie is the perfect place for me. They have great combo deals, like 18 pieces of sushi for $5.50. That’s what I always get. Sushi combo, and with a little extra cost, I can twist the combo a little and get the special rolls I love (the avocado roll). The portions are on the larger side. The quality of the sushi rice is nice, soft and fluffy. The wasabi is to kill for. It is very strong, I love it.

Pictured below are various selections from the Bento Box A, which is about $7.00 and includes miso soup, green salad, California roll, chicken (or beef or vegetarian) teriyaki, prawn and yam tempura, and deep fried gyoza. What a deal! Also pictured below is the BC Roll (around $2.00).

“The kalamari entree was even more enormous than the other dishes and so large that whenever one of us forked a morsel, five or six little kalamari pieces fell to the table ($9.99).”

Pictured below is the roast lamb, which is a steal at $8.99 and is served with rice, potatoes, Greek salad, and a very tasty tomato ratatouille (something that you don’t usually find at Greek restaurants). Everything on the menu is under $10, and the wine is also reasonably priced.

Pictured below is the dish “Moons over My Hammy” which is more than just a cheese sandwich… it’s a toasted cheese sandwich loaded with lots of ham and egg. This is definitely good food for an energizing breakfast or a midnight snack.

Their downtown Yaletown location (206B Davie St., Vancouver, phone 604-647-0123) is a bit hard to get to because of the Canada Line construction, but is worth a visit if you’re in the area. Click here for addresses and maps to Quiznos’ other numerous locations in Vancouver. My favorite sub at Quiznos is the Turkey Bacon Guacamole (pictured below, around $8.50), which is no longer displayed on the menu, but can be ordered on request at most locations. Quiznos is a slightly more upscale competitor to the Subway chain of sandwich restaurants, and Quiznos uses a different toasting process which I find doesn’t dry out the bread as much. The menu at Quiznos also features some vegetarian selections.

It’s an intimate dining room located on the second floor of the commercial building on Denman Street, very close to the Davie intersection. We tried the Chef’s Special Dinner Box ($29.95) which in my opinion was really worth it (some of the items are pictured below). And to accompany the food I really liked the restaurant’s choice of laid-back jazz background music.

At Thai Away Home you can order take out (which is what many people do), or order at the counter and then eat in the restaurant. This tiny restaurant has won awards in the local newspapers for Best Thai in the casual / take out category. (Click here to view another picture from this restaurant -Part 1).

The Davie Mongolian BBQ (1161 Davie Street, Vancouver, phone 604-669-4545) is an affordable, all-you-can eat version of the Mongolian BBQ on Broadway. Fill up a bowl with your choice of thinly sliced meat, tofu, vegetables, and a plethora of sauces, and watch as the chef quickly cooks your selections on a massive, round metal grill, and then scoops your meal with a flourish into a clean waiting bowl. If you’re so inclined, add some garnish of sweet pineapple or sesame seeds (pictured below). For dinner, you can eat as many bowls as you like, for a low price of $10.99, which also includes rice and salad. What a great deal!

Located in the heart of Vancouver’s downtown Davie Street area, Samurai is usually packed with people well into the evening. Be prepared to wait a few minutes in line, but I think you’ll find that the wait is well worth it! Pictured below are the assorted sashimi, and the Saba (mackerel) sashimi. Price is quite reasonable at this restaurant, considering the quality of the food. For two people ordering some pretty fancy items, the bill came out to around $30.00.
